You hear triathlon coaches saying it all the time: you have to race at your own pace. In other words, you have to swim, bike and run at a pace that your own body can handle. Trying to keep up with the Joneses means it’s not only going to hinder your race, but quite possibly put an end to it if you’re racing outside of what you should be. Just before I went for surgery, I went for a walk that morning in our local village to get some fresh air and gather my thoughts. It was crisp, clear and cold (watch the video). I took some pics along the way and was meditative in the process.
One of the foremost things on my mind was around the idea that I wouldn’t be able to exercise for a while because of the nature of the surgery. It would take a while before being able to get active and mobile again. Continue reading Blog: Does Gratefulness Make You A Champion?
I sat down with a friend of mine some weeks ago. He shared this quote with me: “More people die coming down Mount Everest than ascending it.” Continue reading Blog: More people die coming down Everest than going up
A few weeks ago, I had surgery to repair an inguinal hernia. Two weeks later I was at the doctor’s rooms again, only to discover that somehow, I had hand, foot and mouth. Continue reading Blog: It’s not easy to take it easy

When I consider the life of Jesus, one of the interesting lessons I take away is to do with interruptions. All the stuff written about him wasn’t strategized or pre-planned: the water being turned into wine, the fish and the loaves, the calming on the stormy seas… all those miraculous stories were based on interruptions. Continue reading Life is about interruptions
Those who have been following my journey into triathlon would have seen a couple of false starts with races. Such is life in 2022.
I entered Race2Stanford – a triathlon – which looked like such an epic event. Half Ironman distance: 1.9km swim, followed by a 90km bike ride, followed by a 21.1km run between Hermanus and Stanford in the picturesque Western Cape.
That was enough of a challenge and a lure for me. So I began training. Continue reading Not Ironman… RyanMan.
