We’re off to Cape Town. I’ve been rethinking the life I dreamed about. It was always about putting down roots.
But we’ve been existing as semi-type gypsies in 2022, living in limbo while waiting for paperwork to get sorted out. We’ve “worked the wait” (so to speak) and it’s been quite enlightening.

Because we can work remotely from anywhere that has an internet connection, our energy has been thrown into planning and logistics in order to homeschool our kids and allow them to travel as part of their education.
I’ve written about the things I am learning as a homeschool parent. To sum it up it’s about learning as opposed to teaching. Fellow homeschool parents (who’ve been doing it for decades) told me: “It doesn’t matter if they miss a whole year”, and I can hear many teachers in the schooling system squealing the odds. But it is an interesting idea.
Consider our environments and what they’re conducive to: just because a little dude is sitting at a desk in school, doesn’t mean he’s learning much.
Travelling is different though. And the world that our children will have to adult in requires that they understand places and people, and themselves.

This trip to Cape Town is also about visiting my family. My brother left for the mother city straight after school and my folks and younger sister followed in 2010, and we’re going to relish our time with them.
What about the roots of friendship back “home”? I’ve been thinking a lot about this as well. My friends remain my friends, no matter where in the world I am. That’s the power of community. Yes, we miss each other. Yes, we long for the day to catch up and share some more memories and life together. But they’re no less my friends than they always have been. Just like my parents and my siblings.
So off we go. Our relationships remain. Learning awaits.

Exciting times for your family. I’m learning from your learning so thank you for being so generous with sharing your journey. Praying safe travels, adventure and divine appointments along the way.
