Music video, Brad the manager and new plans

RCB brainstorm

After the hustle, bustle and general mad rush of RCB activity last year – which saw us release a CD on a six-gig tour of Cape Town, share the stage with SA greats Watershed, Prime Circle, Wonderboom, Plush as well as many great local artists on the same journey seeking success in the SA music scene – it was time for a lekgotla of our own to drink coffee, talk, chirp and tease out a strategy for the new year.

The first task for RCB friend/fan/drum tech/sound engineer/bouncer/advisor and new manager Brad Hutton, was to herd us into the next phase in a way that would facilitate Roberto and Cora-Lee’s imminent arrival and change in status,  while at the same time increase sales and grow our support base. With all the basics for social networking in place and a butt-kicking website to boot, we now turn our attention to the realm of the music video. And not just your garden-variety, professionally-produced, big-budget-fried-chicken Sama-assured music video here. Oh no, sportsfans. We intend to do the music video in the RAW!

Actually that was a suggestion by a misguided supporter on Facebook who will remain nameless as long as it remains profitable. But this is something that our fearless frontman Ryan actually contemplated, until Tammy gave voice to reason (love you Tam). So after much deliberation and little more serious thought, we decided to shelve this until such time as brand sponsorship dictate its necessity.

But the rawness will still play itself out, in that we have R 000 000.00 video budget and are armed with a twinkle in the eye, various varied giftings and a generous dollop of enthusiasm (plus Brad threatened to moer us if we didn’t). Add to this an opportunity to attempt like-mindedness with six creative thinkers, and the wheels start squeaking in protest, threatening to shear off at the hub.

But such is the pedigree of the Calders – veterans of staged musical productions at the Hexagon Theatre and avid researchers of internet trends; Brad’s business savvy calm; the Hemmero’s plain awesomeness; and the air of sophistication that my blue-blood Benoni heritage brings (scientifically-proven fact for all you wristband devotees), that by the second meeting we have managed to settle on a concept and plot; and by the third meeting we plan to present a trio of storyboards for final muster… before we start plotting production and Youtube domination.

Until then, you are cordially invited to watch this space. To be the first to catch the news, sign up for our newsletter – on the right side of this page – or click on facebook.com/ryancalderband or twitter.com/theRCB for updates.

  1. Nice one Rudi and RCB – looking forward to the awesomeness!

    1. Thanks Doug! We are too 🙂

    2. Thanks D. Newtown is probably going to be involved one way or another, you realise?

  2. Is that a familiar face on the couch?

I dig the vid idea. I thinks its rocks. Not have it raw, that be disgusting, simmer it like poitjie.

Will the lekgotla members have an Imbizo for us to suggest the song to be vid? Pick me please 🙂

    Love you guys (am Tammy)

    1. The Imbizo be here Hloni (and anyone else)! 🙂 Tell us which song you think…

We’re thinking Alive, track 4 on the album. It’s a short (2min30) song which is ideal length for web and for TV inserts; it’s got an African flavour (Johnny Clegg inspired style); and the lyrics tie in with a cool concept.

    2. Anyone else got ideas on a song for a music vid?

  3. Just listened to alive and thought that a video using the wonderful country you live in as a back drop. (looking up to heaven) table mountain (burning fire) a number of people sitting round a great roaring fire out in the bush. The band on the pier singing with the dam/sea as a back drop.

Can you see were I am going with this.May be a bit kitch but use what you have.

This is what the song did for me may be way off but its what it did for me.

    Ant

    1. Well would you believe it! That’s the song foremost in our minds too! 🙂 Thanks so much for the feedback Ant! Will have to chat to the manager about giving you shares in the business… 🙂
